Oscar II Land and Ny Ålesund
A summer ski trip in June.
Nok 11.950,- per
pers.
A summer ski trip in June. From the north side of Isfjord we will
ski over the glaciers of Oscar II Land, all the way to Ny-Ålesund,
the worlds northern most settlement. The first and last part of the trip
will be as transportation by boat.
Day by day program:
Day 1: Pick
up at your hotel in Longyearbyen. Information and briefing about the
trip, security, equipment etc. Last preparations and packing of pulks
and rucksacks. As soon as we are ready we start off by car to the pier
and we go aboard the boat. The boat will cross Isfjorden, and we’ll
leave it on the north side, in Ymerbukta. Warm lunch on land. We start
skiing from here and in a short while we will be on glacier with ski
and pulks. The dogs will help us pulling the pulks and they will also
stay around the tents at night, to alarm us in case of Polar bears approaching
the camp. The camping cooker will be turned out during night. Dinner
and overnight in tent.
Day 2 – day 6: the following five days we break
camp after breakfast before skiing , always in direction north. The most
part of the trip is on glaciers. We can also choose to have calmer days
returning to the same camp site if we wish. The route will be selected
by the participants and the guide together every morning, depending on
weather and snow conditions as well as the wishes of the participants.
Everyday we have warm lunch outdoors and late in the afternoon we will
set camp. After Esmarkbreen we will move East, over Borebreen, through
Kjepasset and Wahlenbergbreen. Many places we have to use ropes. The
view is fantastic: we left Isfjord and summer season behind, we and we
are going into a warm winter with a lot of sun and high temperatures.
If there is no wind it is possible to walk with t-shirt. The last two
days we cross Sveabreen to Kongspasset. From here we walk down to Kongsfjorden.
In the evening we make camp along the coast of Kongsfjorden . There is
bird life, ice is smelting in the sea with a lot of beautiful colours
contrast. On one side of us we have the big front of the glacier Kongsbreen.
Day 7: Breakfast and clearing the camp area. We walk
by skis or by feet along the coast; it depends on the snow conditions.
Usually we have the skis on our rucksacks the last kilometres before
Ny Ålesund. When we arrive in Ny Ålesund we take sightseeing
(if we have time!), we visit the museum and the Nobile mast. Ny Ålesund
is the most beautiful settlement in Svalbard , the northernmost village
in the world and the loneliest place in the world. Here different nations
cooperate in scientific projects. In the evening we go aboard the boat
that will transport us back to Longyearbyen. Dinner and overnight on
board. The route is along the Kongsfjorden and along the west side of
Prins Karls Forland. Late at night we sail inn the Isfjorden and arrive
in Longyearbyen after midnight .
